Error reading socket or socket timed out

Article updated on 01 July, 2008

Description

AXIGEN Filtering Module reports "Error reading socket or socket timed out" messages in the log

Error cause

The AV/AS product is responding very slowly using the milter protocol

Resolution

Sometimes, due to filtering applications (like antivirus or antispam products) slow response on socket, the AXIGEN Filtering module returns errors in the log files, like the following ones:
ERROR: Error reading socket or socket timed out: 127.0.0.1:1990
ERROR: Error in milter communication protocol
In order to solve this problem, you need to increase the timeout value in the aximilter.conf file (consult the README file contained in the downloaded tar.gz package for the full file path of the aximilter.conf file):
rwTimeout = 65535
Restart the axigenfilters system service.
