How to access AXIGEN collaboration features via iCal using Mozilla Thunderbird (Lightning)

Article updated on 28 April, 2009

Description

This article describes how access to AXIGEN collaboration suite can be defined for Mozilla Thunderbird using Lightning as an iCal support basis.

Resolution

The newly introduced support for iCal, available with the AXIGEN 7.1 release, provides new methods for accessing the collaboration facilities that are built-in into AXIGEN.

For a full understanding on the iCal support facilities, we recommend on first accessing the following KB article, alongside our online documentation point.
Prior to continuing with this article make sure that you have enabled the iCal support into AXIGEN.

iCal, as a basis of interaction between Mozilla Thunderbird and AXIGEN, can be deployed via the Lighning add-on, for example, by downloading and applying it into the e-mail client. This add-on is freely available via the addons page reserved for the Mozilla Thunderbird project. This will be considered as a prerequisites for the steps bellow.

This article will detail on how to open our own default Calendar and Tasks folders, our locally defined Calendar or Task type folders and other users Calendar and Tasks folders.

For this process we will assume Example Org as our local organization with two users John Doe <jdoe@example.org> and Laura White <lwhite@example.org>.

Opening user default folders

As user John Doe, we can open our local Calendar and Tasks folders as follows:

Select to add a new calendar

The calendar definition will be something along the lines:

Finishing up our definitions:

and the end result:

At this point both Calendar Events and Tasks will be available for access using your e-mail client. Moreover these will be synchronized with the server existing data.

For specific Calendar type folders, such as in the example folder hierarchy:

we can access this data via iCal using the following logic:

and the end result will be:

Opening others' shared Calendar and Tasks.
Assuming that our sample colleague, Laura White, has granted our user access to her folders, as in the example below (WebMail screenshot), for both the Calendar folder and Tasks

John Doe can now access these folders as follows:

These details are now accessible in our e-mail client too.

For opening other users' local defined Calendar and Task type folders, make sure to follow our documentation page presented in the initial documentation reference.
