How to avoid mailing list messages to become private

Article updated on 02 July, 2008

Description

When replying to a message on a mailing list the message is sent to the original sender, not to the entire list.

Resolution

By default when members of a list reply to a message the conversation becomes private and the email is no longer sent to the list.

In order to have all emails sent to the list every time a member replies to a message from the list please take the following steps:

1) Via Webadmin → Domains & Accounts → Mailling lists → Click “EDIT” for the list → Subscription and posting tab.
2) In the Message Headers area click Define and add the text: "Reply-To"
(without double quotes) and then click Quick Add.
This action will delete the “Reply-To” header from emails sent to and from the
mailing list.

Bellow you have the "Message Templates" area;
3) Click on the "Insert Header" button and add the text bellow:
Reply-To: %l@%d
The %l and %d expend to the list name respectively to the domain name
resulting the list's email address.
This last step will re-add the header "Reply-To", but it will be modified as <list name>@<domain name>

Applies to

Releases: Mail Server 5.0.X, Mail Server 6.0.X, Mail Server 6.1.X
OS: Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Solaris
