Can not send email through Axigen SMTP server - Relay denied for <gmail.com> - BUG or wrong setup?

Hello!

The only way I can send mail through Axigen SMTP if I turn off authentication, and let relaying without using username and password, or whitelist all the IP addresses I want to use the client computer (notebook) for sending mail.

Please let me know how should I authenticate to let Axigen use the SMTP modul to send mail from outside (gmail) to outside (gmail) with Axigen’s smart host (gmail).

So… Local domain is some.homeftp.net
Email client is Thunderbird 78.
SMTP setting in Thunderbird:
Server: some.homeftp.net
Port: 465 / 25
Username: someuser
Auth method: No authentication / Normal password / Encrypted password
Connection Security: SSL/TLS

Axigens config:
SMTP Receiving ports IP v4, IP v6:
465 SSL - enabled
25 - enabled

Security and Filtering > Acceptance and Routing > Routing Basic Settings
Allow / Disallow relaying:
Allow relaying from any IP: ON
Require authentication: ON

Exceptions: the main PC with Axigen on: 192.168.1.2 - Allow delivery YES - Require Auth NO

Outgoing delivery settings are ok. From the main PC I can send mails with Thunderbird with no authentication.
The client notebook should have to be able to send mail from ANY IP with authentication of course.

Acceptance and Routing > Greylisting: OFF

NOTE: I use my gmail address as a “From:” address in Thunderbird, but would authenticate with the Axigen domain’s user (someuser@some.homeftp.net)
Using the above someuser mail account as a “From:” account is not the way I want.

Axigen can receive mails from outside domains to local (someuser@some.homeftp.net) accounts. (my gmail mails are forwarded to this private domain)

So the question: what should I set in Axigen, or Thunderbird to be able to use authentication? (username - someuser (with and without @some.homeftp.net) and password are requested and given in Thunderbird, so Axigen asks for it, but seems it ignores it and acts like no authentication was made and denies relaying.)

Thank You for helping me out!

Hello Zsolt,

I’m not sure if I’ve understand exactly your problem but I hope this KB ( Allow authenticated users to send messages using identities) is somehow related to your issue.

If you still have problems please increase log level to Protocol Communication for SMTP Receiving service and share your logs for such a session.

indreias, sending with authentication works now! Thank You!
So if I understand this rule, Axigen ignores the auth username and want to use the sender / “From” as the username, even the mail client sends the username that should be used for authentication? (and with this rule Axigen ignores the from header and uses the username sent by the mail client as auth user for smtp relaying)
If the above is correct, I just can’t get the logic behind.
Nevermind… until You can translate my logic to Axigen logic and have solution it can work!

So, again: thank You being so patient with me!

Hello Zsolt,

Actually, the setup described into the KB is saying that Axigen will allow usage of another “mail from” address than the one used for authentication purposes. The default setup is preventing this setup in order to avoid abuse situations for a mail server entered too soon into production.
