Webmail - You are not allowed to use the specified 'From' address

Hi!
I just installed Community version 10.3.1.10.0 of axigen.
When I tried to set from: -address user name part (at WebMail interface) to not specific, I got this “You are not allowed to use the specified ‘From’ address.” error message. At the settings user acount don’t have any send restrictions set.

Searching from documentation, it points me to “Outlook plugin”, what I cannot find. Anyway, this is not outlook problem. I just need to have possibility to set my from addresses name part.

Hiya!
Have you created an alias for the “from” address you want to use, added to the address you are logging on with?

Example:
If you log on with “john@doe.com”, you can’t send e-mails as “bob@doe.com”, if “bob” has not been added as an alias of john.

The same goes when using a different sender domain:
If you haven’t added alias domains to (in this example) doe.com, you will never be able to use it - it would be a sort of open relay, somthing which serious mail server software creators (Axigen for instance) would not allow.

So sending as joe@toodles.com, whilst logged on as john@doe.com, would only be possible, if toodles.com is an alias of your doe.com domain.

Got it?

Cheers
JK

Hi!
No, I have not make alias. I would not describe it as “open relay” because I need to change only the user name part. Domain part is still the same domain what I own and what that email server serves.

This is related directly to Regexp email address/aliases

Right now I have “solved” this alias problem the way where incoming emails arrives to different SMTP server where postfix do it’s magic with regexp -aliases and forward email the to to axigen-server.

But right now I cannot “answer” to those messages, because I cannot change (easily) from: -address directly…
“Best” solution (when I press “reply”), would be that, that webmail automatically would use emails’ to: -address as from: -address.

Hi!
Is there a way to make “Advanced Acceptance / Routing Rules” setting what would allow known user (logged in) to relay mail out, without creating “alias” for every different outgoing sender address.

I can receive mail with “regexp” rule addresses (check Regexp email address/aliases ) and it would be “practical” to send with those addresses too.

To send out email, I can use Thunderbird -program what allows me to change “From:” address freely, but I cannot use my axigen server as SMTP server without first adding that “From-address” to it’s “alias” list.

Hello,

I’m sorry to confirm but you could not use an arbitrary From address when replying from Axigen WebMail interface.

HTH,
Ioan

… nor I can use axigen smtp as relaying mail out if “from” address is not at the “alias” list. Using Thunderbird as my mail client.

So… Could I make “feature request”, that same way like I can make “Regexp incoming mail rule”, I could write "Regexp rule for outgoing addresses.
Of course it would be enough that I could use Regexp at “alias-addresses”.
So, I could write rule like ‘www.*@mydomain.tld’, what would accept “from” addresses like ‘www.company.com@mydomain.tld’.

Well … if we are talking about SMTP side than I could bet that it is a problem of mail client configuration.

Basically you like to login with your own account and send with both mail-from (envelope) and from (header) set to a different email address (the one you like to disclose so you could blacklist if you will receive spam to it).

Is this correct?

Have you checked the options you have in Thunderbird when configuring the identities an account could have?

From Axigen side you may allow an authenticated account to use a different mail-from (envelope) with an “advanced” rule similar with:

Condition: all of the conditions below

  • Connection > Is Authenticated: ticked

Action: Authentication > Authenticate mail from: unticked

In case you have set the above rule and still have problems when sending from Thunderbird please set the log level to Communication Protocol for SMTP Receiving service and share the logs for a failed tentative.

HTH,
Ioan

PS: applicable KB: Allow authenticated users to send messages using identities

Thank you!
This solved the problem! Now I can use Thunderbird to send email when specific from address is needed!

…however it would be nice to have this kind of feature at the webmail too…

And I don’t know why it is not allowed, as long as domain part of address is domain what that axigen installation is serving.
Because user can always create alias and that point it’s allowed to send mail with that address… It would be easier, if you don’t need to create alias every time…
